And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him,“I am willing; be cleansed.”Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
Mark 1:40-42 (NASB)
Imagine with me for a moment.....imagine if you hadn't been touched, held or hugged for weeks, months, or even decades. What if when people saw you they ran in the other direction? That would hurt wouldn't it?
The thing is, this man, whose name we don't know, had to face this every minute of every day. People weren't interested in who he was, they just saw all that scarred up skin and they were afraid.
Can you imagine the courage that it must of taken this leper-man to come close to Jesus and hope that He wouldn't run the other way like everyone else? He knew the God-man, Jesus, could do it. But would He?
So the leper-man approaches God-man and what do you think he sees in the eyes of Jesus?
Filled with compassion Jesus reaches out and God skin touches leper skin. Our loving Jesus doesn't try to get away from this man, but instead he comes skin to skin with pain and suffering and makes everything right.
The pain of this world can spin crazy with disease, loneliness and rejection but our God reaches right into to all that with compassion. His willing reach touches all our aching places.
