Our everlasting light
"No longer will you have the sun for light by day, Nor for brightness will the moon give you light; But you will have the LORD for an everlasting light, And your God for your glory."
I watched the sun break through the clouds this morning and heard the birds start to sing like it was nearly springtime. I know that we are still in the midst of winter but what a joy to hear birdsong and see blue sky and the brightness of the light warming the bare trees.
A friend of Jesus, Isaiah, wrote that one day we won't have the sun for light by day or the brightness of the moon by night, because the Lord himself will be our everlasting light (60:19). The light of who Jesus is will warm and illuminate the whole world. The light of Jesus will cause the birds to sing, the trees to bud and the grass to grow. We will all spread our picnic blankets out in the wonderful glow of who He is.
I don't know how Jesus is going to be the everlasting light of the world, but I do know that His light brings life (Jn. 8:12). Can you imagine going to a place where you feel more alive than you have ever felt before? When the sun broke through the clouds this morning I felt a tiny piece of that, a tiny feeling of life bubbling up on the inside of me, like I wanted to love more and play more. I felt happy and alive. When Jesus is our everlasting light I think we will experience that 10 times, 100 times, 1000 times more. It's going to be amazing!
