All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.
Isaiah 60:3 (NLT)
Did you know that when the Wise Men came to see Jesus they weren't there at the same time at the shepherds? I didn't realize that for a long time. You see, I'd always gazed into those beautiful nativity scenes and seen all the people around the manger adoring the baby named Jesus. There was Mary and Joseph, the shepherds with sheep on their shoulders and the Wise Men. I just assumed that was how it was, but it wasn't that way at all. The Wise Men came from the east sometime later.
I like that we traditionally know those men as "wise". What a beautiful kind of wisdom they had to follow the star, the bright light, to the place where the baby was in all His glowing radiance. I wonder what they saw in Jesus that made them bow down and worship Him. What inspired them to leave their expensive treasures with a little baby in humble surroundings. What do you think?
Hebrews 1:3 says, "The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God,.." (NLT) That means that Jesus shows us exactly what God is like, and those men who were so wise knew that Jesus had God's own brightness coming from Him. And they bowed down before Him.
Maybe you've never thought about this: Jesus was Jewish and the Wise Men were not. Now isn't that the beautiful part of this? God led men from far away families to His Son. That's what He loves to do - bring those that are far away, near! He wants us all to be His.
All around the world tonight families are gathering together celebrating Epiphany - God coming to live with us here on planet Earth in the person of Jesus, and Jesus' revealing of His father in heaven. Can you imagine if Jesus had never come to live among people? Do you think it would be harder to know what God is like?
Maybe today is a good day to thank God for coming to us, to the whole world. It doesn't matter to Him where you live or what you do, what language you speak or what color your skin is. What matters to God is that you seek Him like those Wise Men and when you catch a glimpse of His radiance, his loveliness, you tenderly get down low and adore Him.
